Ann Arbor Stake Dance Policy


Vision: For the Strength of Youth: “We promise that as you keep these standards and live by the truths in the scriptures, you will be able to do your life’s work with greater wisdom and skill and bear trials with greater courage. You will have the help of the Holy Ghost. You will feel good about yourself and will be a positive influence in the lives of others. You will be worthy to go to the temple to receive holy ordinances. These blessings and many more can be yours.”


Music: “Praise the Lord with singing, with music, with dancing” (Doctrine & Covenants 136:28. For the Strength of Youth: Music should not drive away the spirit, encourage immorality, glorify violence, contain foul or offensive language, or promote evil practices.


Expectations


Unit leaders: Inform youth of dance theme and dress standards before each dance. Youth are to sign in at dance entrance agreeing to follow the standards, as attached, and to take responsibility for friends they bring with them, to abide by these standards.


Chaperones: At least one representative from each ward Bishopric, YM presidency, and YW Presidency. There should be 1 chaperone for every 8-10 youth. Wards provide transportation to and from all Stake dances for their youth.


Stake Leaders: Will provide clothing for those who attend who do not meet the standard.
Ward and Stake leaders are responsible to enforce standards in a respectful way to youth.


Dress & Appearance


For the Strength of Youth: “The way you dress is a reflection of who you are inside. Your dress and grooming send messages about you to others and influence the way you and others act. When you are well groomed and modestly dressed, you invite the companionship of the Spirit and can exercise a good influence on those around you”. “Know ye not that ye are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwelleth in you? The temple of God is holy, which temple you are” (I Corinthians 3:16-17)


Would I be comfortable in the Lord’s presence?


Young Women should wear clothing that covers the midriff and shoulder. Skirts should be to the knee. Avoid clothing that is low cut in front or back.


Young Men should wear clean, neat, modest clothing - pants that fit. Avoid extremes in clothing, appearance, and hairstyles.


Dancing & Behavior


Dancing can be fun and provide an opportunity to meet new people.


Dancing should create an atmosphere where the Spirit of the Lord may be present.


Be courteous to others: use clean wholesome language.


Avoid full body contact. Violent or physically dangerous dancing is not permitted.


Do not use positions or moves suggestive of sexual behavior.


No same–gender slow dancing.


Follow directions of those in charge.
